Hear, Hear for Tapirs!

For millions of years, tapirs have survived as other species have come and gone. But today, their future looks a lot less certain. Donations are critically needed this WORLD TAPIR DAY for their conservation.

A tapir may look like a cross of many different animals (pig, panda, anteater, just to name a few!), but these herbivorous mammals deserve a day all to themselves. And for an important reason, all four species of tapir — lowland, Baird’s, mountain, and Malayan — are classified as ENDANGERED or vulnerable to extinction.

Wild Facts:

  • Most tapirs live in South America, Central America and Southeastern Asia’s jungle and forested regions.
  • Their prehensile nose is not just for looks. Like an elephant’s trunk, a tapir’s snout is used to grab food or as a snorkel when swimming. Yes, tapirs are excellent swimmers!
  • All four species are threatened by habitat destruction, hunting, climate change and urban development.

Why They Matter

Tapirs, often dubbed the "gardeners of the forest," play a crucial role in maintaining the ecosystems they inhabit. As herbivores, they help disperse seeds of various plants, contributing to forest regeneration and biodiversity. Additionally, tapirs serve as indicators of ecosystem health, reflecting the balance and integrity of their habitats.

Conservation Works

When we make an effort to protect ENDANGERED species and restore key ecosystems, we give the planet a chance at survival. One of the best ways to support the conservation of unique animals, like tapirs, is through charitable donations.

Set up a monthly donation with VAKOVAKO to help ENDANGERED wildlife. Your monthly gift could make a difference in powering the work of vital wildlife conservation organizations.
