Millions At Risk: Save Our Wildlife

This WORLD WILDLIFE DAY, learn about the growing threats to wildlife.

WORLD WILDLIFE DAY was established to honor our natural wonders and the beautifully intricate ecosystems across the planet — while raising awareness about the growing dangers our wildlife faces due to human activity.

But what exactly are these growing threats?

Our rising population and the demand for land due to agriculture, urbanization, and consumerism, leave little room for wildlife to thrive. If our wildlife doesn’t thrive — neither will we. Every medicine, food product, and resource is derived from nature. If we don't act now — we risk losing not only an abundance of nature, but also our way of life.

In 2020, The World Wildlife Fund reported our global wildlife declined by 50%. This is in large part due to human activity. Our planet simply cannot handle the modern demands of consumption. This has had a devastating impact on our biodiversity. The Living Planet Report found that biodiversity has decreased nearly 70% since 1970. This alarming decrease in our planet's wildlife will not only impact our food sources and natural resources; but also our climate as a whole. The one million plants and animals currently threatened by habitat loss all work together within their ecosystems to regulate our climate. Each animal and plant plays a role in their ecosystem; from the pollinators to the trees that regulate carbon in our atmosphere. Forced migration or extinction due to habitat loss from human activity could have nearly irreparable consequences.

It's not too late to act to protect our wildlife. Conservationists and scientists around the planet have been working tirelessly to restore and protect our biodiversity. You can be part of their solutions to our wildlife crisis.
