Meet Ocean Conservancy
Ocean Conservancy is a nonprofit organization focused on protecting the world’s oceans. They search for and promote workable solutions to the largest oceanic problems, such as trash dumping, overfishing and ice melt. They also collect stories and information from the oceans and the people who depend on them, then use these stories to raise public awareness of the importance of our oceans. Today, Ocean Conservancy prizes science and individual action.
Because of their efforts, Ocean Conservancy contributed to the international whaling ban in 1982 and have helped cleanup 220 million pounds of waste through their International Coastal Cleanup program. Today, Ocean Conservancy is focused on fighting global warming and reducing pollution in our oceans. In 2022, they helped remove 5,000 pounds of abandoned fishing gear from the Gulf of Maine and conducted extensive research into microplastics in food.
Around half of contributions received by Ocean Conservancy are in the form of individual donations, and 87% of spending goes towards its programs and administration. They were awarded a 4-star rating and 94% overall score by Charity Navigator.
