Tuna in Trouble on World Tuna Day

Fish might make for a tasty meal, but our oceans are now so severely overfished, that they may be virtually empty before 2050.

WORLD TUNA DAY brings global attention to the vital role tuna and other marine species play in sustaining both ecosystems and international communities. But what happens if our oceans run out of fish?

The scary truth about overfishing

3 billion people rely on fish and other seafood products. But 90% of large fish stocks, which includes tuna, are gone. As the world population passes 8 billion, the demand for seafood is only expected to grow.

We have enough fishing vessels to fish on four Earth-size planets, but today there is not nearly enough fish to catch. Despite measures to help create more sustainable fishing, bluefin tuna populations are still half what they were in 1950.

If our oceans are completely emptied of fish, not only would we approach ecological collapse, but millions of people may become food insecure and/or face malnutrition.

Turn the tide to save our seas

We depend so much on our oceans, but now they are depending on us. Sustainable fishing practices and consumer habits are essential to helping fish populations and marine ecosystems bounce back to healthy levels.

In donating to organizations, like Ocean Alliance, you play a crucial role in supporting support science-based policies and fishery management can make a huge difference. Set up your monthly donation today to save our seas!
