The most endangered giants on Earth

Six out of the 13 great whale species are threatened with extinction. But these three species are swimming even closer to extinction. Here’s why.

Rice’s Whale — Critically Endangered

The Rice’s whale is the newest of the large whale species, but it’s already critically endangered. As few as 50 of these whales remain just south of the Florida panhandle. What is causing their population to decline? Their home is right in the middle of a busy shipping corridor, which means they are constantly at risk of vessel strikes and oil contamination. It’s estimated the 2010 Gulf oil spill killed 17% of their species and left 25% of females with reproductive problems.

North Atlantic Right Whale — Critically Endangered

For over 50 years, North Atlantic Right whales have been listed as endangered. Today there are less than 400 remaining and only 70 of them are reproductively active. What is causing their population to decline? These whales have been targeted by commercial whalers since the 19th century. While an international whaling ban exists, their population hasn’t been able to recover to pre-whaling numbers. As they spend so much time near the surface, they are one of the most at risk whale species for vessel strikes.

Blue Whale — Endangered

The largest and loudest animal on earth is also one of the most threatened. Though their numbers are higher than the other two whales previously mentioned (10,000-25,000 individuals), there used to be over 250,000 blue whales. What is causing their population to decline? Though protected, these whales are still getting entangled by fishing gear, hit by large vessels, and confused by noise pollution.

How can you help? Donate now!

These whales aren’t extinct yet — but our last chance to save them is now. Donate to VAKOVAKO. Even a small donation can make a big impact for our whales and oceans.

100% of your donation will go to the non-profit Ocean Alliance to be used for scientific equipment, expedition activities and more to help humanity better understand whales and to better protect them.
