Meet Amazon Watch
Amazon Watch knows — it’s the rainforests that sustain us. For over 30 years, Amazon Watch has worked to protect rainforests and advance the rights of indigenous people of the Amazon Basin in Ecuador, Peru, Colombia and Brazil. In an effort to turn their vision of a world where nature and indigenous rights are venerated, Amazon Watch focuses its efforts on eliminating deforestation and destructive practices of the Amazon rainforest and its resources, advancing indigenous-led solutions to conservation and sustainability, as well as supporting climate justice in the form of indigenous advocacy and agency.
Some of their top initiatives include the Amazon Defenders Fund, which provides solidarity funds and resources to indigenous nations impacted by climate-related emergencies, violence and repression, Women Defenders, a program prioritizing indigenous women in leadership, and Power to the Protectors, which helps Amazon’s indigenous communities receive the education and resources for clean energy solutions and infrastructure.
In an effort to “decolonize philanthropy,” Amazon Watch distributes one-third of their total budget to direct programs. Additionally, Charity Navigator awarded Amazon Watch a 4-star rating and 99% overall score.
