Reforesting is the practice of recovering deforested land by planting native seeds to encourage regrowth of the forest. This practice is crucial — it speeds up a process that normally takes 20-65 years. Here’s how reforestation programs and campaigns are helping regenerate RAINFORESTS worldwide.
- In the Itombwe Rainforest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Women’s Earth and Climate Action Network has collaborated with Synergie des Associations Feminines to both restore the rainforest and provide income for women. Thanks to this program, communities that originally harvested rainforests are now focused on restoring the rainforest.
- The Borneo Nature Foundation has planted 268,816 trees in Borneo’s rainforest — with a goal of one million trees in the next five years. This program is restoring habitats for over 6,000 orangutans native to the area. They utilize drones, helicopters, and planes to spread seeds across deforested land.
- In December 2023, Brazil made headlines at COP28 when they announced their $204 million plan to restore a 60,000 square km (23,160 square miles) segment of the Amazon rainforest through reforesting. This program could help avoid the catastrophic Amazon tipping point.
- The United Nation’s 2021 campaign #GenerationRestoration promoted reforestation in urban areas worldwide. Cities like Manaus in Brazil committed to reducing Amazon deforestation by 80% and restoring the local ecosystem by reforesting.
