An Update on the Amazon

The race to save the Amazon continues as its collapse feels imminent. Will you join the efforts?

Newly published studies indicate the compounding effect of deforestation, climate change, and severe drought on one of the world’s most vital ecosystems: the Amazon. Here’s what you need to know about those latest reports:

  • Scientists warn the Amazon is approaching a tipping point faster than previously expected, which could put the entire forest ecosystem into a state of collapse.
  • 50% of the Amazon is highly or moderately vulnerable to transforming into grasslands or degraded ecosystems, including nearly untouched areas.
  • Large-scale deforestation and fires are causing the Amazon’s southeast to emit more carbon dioxide than it absorbs.
  • If the Amazon collapses it could emit 20 years’ worth of carbon into the atmosphere at once.
  • To save the Amazon we need to keep deforestation below 10%, the annual dry season can’t exceed five months, and we must work towards restoring at least 5% of the forest.

What can you do?

While studies continue to uncover the effects of deforestation, climate change, and prolonged droughts, it’s clear that we cannot wait to do something about the RAINFOREST crisis.
