The Drivers of Amazon Deforestation

If a tree falls in the Amazon — the effects are felt around the world. Get a glimpse of the causes and effects of deforestation in the Amazon.

Deforestation in the Amazon is a problem for everybody — but we can solve it together. Take a look at the causes and effects of deforestation in the Amazon and why it’s a priority for fighting climate change.

The causes of deforestation in the Amazon

Deforestation in the Amazon isn't caused by one singular source, but rather by multiple industries:

  • Cattle ranching: The leading cause of deforestation, cattle ranching, accounts for 80% of the total area of the Amazon rainforest lost. In order to make room for cattle, ranchers raze the land by burning the Amazon’s trees — devastating natural ecosystems.
  • Mining: Both legal and illegal mining in the Amazon has led to wide-scale deforestation throughout Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru. In order to fuel and make space for mining, large swaths of trees are cleared from the Amazon. As a part of this process, mercury is required to extract gold. Mercury creates lasting pollution and widespread poisoning — infiltrating deforested and forested land, and waterways.
  • Soy farming: China, the United States, and the European Union are the three biggest soy consumers — but Brazil is a leader in soybean production. Since there is an agricultural demand for soy in foreign markets; soy is considered economically desirable in Brazil. Approximately 310,000 square kilometres of the Amazon has been lost to soy farming since 1994.

Stopping deforestation in the Amazon

Deforestation in the Amazon can only be stopped by improving deforestation policies and encouraging corporations to respect rainforest conservation efforts. Supporting organizations that are fighting for the Amazon is crucial to making a positive impact. Dedicated organizations like the Rainforest Action Network, Amazon Watch, and Rainforest Trust are working tirelessly to preserve our RAINFORESTS — and our futures.
