Asia’s only species of great ape is declining rapidly due to habitat loss, hunting, and the illegal pet trade. Found only on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra, all three species of orangutans (Bornean, Sumatran, and Tapanuli) are classified as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The Current Situation
The last remaining homes of orangutans, large parts of the old-growth rainforest, have been destroyed for farmland, palm oil plantations, and urban development. The precious little forest that remains is disappearing rapidly, putting the orangutans at increased risk of extinction. Closely linked to habitat destruction is the increase of human-orangutan conflict. As orangutans lose their forest homes, they are pushed closer to human- populated areas. This often scares villagers who may feel they have no option but to harm or kill the helpless orangutans. Equally distressing is the fact that orangutans are hunted, leading to mothers being killed so the baby orangutans can be captured and sold illegally on the black market. Sadly, many people covet having a baby orangutan as a pet, although it is illegal and in the worst interest of the little ape.

While exact numbers remain uncertain, one thing is clear: the number of orangutans in the wild is decreasing.
