Mankind may be one of the orangutans' closest relatives, but humans are also the greatest threat to their survival. Orangutan habitats across the islands of Borneo and Sumatra are disappearing due to human activity. Remaining patches of forest are vanishing at an alarming rate and the number of wild orangutans is decreasing. It is difficult to estimate the number of Bornean, Sumatran, and Tapanuli orangutans remaining in the wild. What we know for certain is that all three species of orangutan are classified as Critically Endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Protecting Orangutans and Rainforests
Orangutan Outreach's mission is to protect orangutans in their native forests of Borneo and Sumatra while providing care for orphaned and displaced orangutans until they can be returned to their natural environment. If orangutans cannot be returned to their forest home, everything possible is done to ensure the apes have a life of dignity and the best possible long-term care. Orangutan Outreach works tirelessly with partners around the world to raise funds and increase public awareness of orangutan conservation issues. This internationally respected organization supports the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of orangutans in crisis and ensures the retirement (lifetime sanctuary care) for orangutans who cannot return to life in the forest. Orangutan Outreach also funds reforestation of degraded land, assuring quality orangutan habitat for many years to come.
