Our closest relatives on the verge of extinction

Gorillas, the magnificent giants of the African forests, are not only a symbol of strength and intelligence but also a critical component of the biodiversity within their habitats. Gorillas are primarily found in the tropical forests of Central Africa.

Mountain gorillas numbered less than 250 when Dian Fossey began her work, she predicted they would be extinct by 2000, but due to her work and legacy they are the only great ape increasing in number, but still only have 1000 indivudals left on the planet.

Grauer’s gorillas have lost more than 60% of their population in the last few decades and are on course to be extinct in the next 30 years if action isn’t taken now.

About Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund

Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund protects two of the four gorilla subspecies — the critically endangered Grauer's gorillas in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the endangered mountain gorillas in Rwanda.

The goal is to ensure the future of gorilla conservation for generations to come. The core mission of Fossey Fund is to save gorillas through a holistic approach that is founded on four key pillars:

  • Protecting Gorillas - Effective conservation requires the direct, sustained protection of wild animals in their natural habitats. Fossey Fund is on the frontlines of gorilla conservation, with dedicated teams on the ground every single day working to ensure the survival of gorillas.
  • Conducting Critical Science -As the world’s longest-running gorilla research program, Fossey Fund combines extensive and unique datasets with cutting-edge science to advance understanding of gorillas and their habitats and to develop effective conservation strategies.
  • Creating Conservationists - Using trusted voice and expertise, Fossey Fund educates and advocates for action to protect wildlife and wild places and provides conservation stakeholders from African and around the globe with opportunities to enhance their skills to become the leaders of today and tomorrow.
  • Building Resilient Communities - The equitable involvement of indigenous peoples and local communities in conservation is essential. Fossey Fund collaborates with communities to address their critical needs with a specific focus on education, livelihoods, and food/water security.

The Fossey Fund has a long-standing reputation for meeting the highest standards of financial excellence. This organization uses approximately 80% of its funds to finance its activities, with the remaining 20% covering administrative and fundraising costs. This makes it one of the most financially efficient institutions of its kind.
