Famine in North Darfur

15 months of war has pushed hundreds of thousands of people sheltering in Sudan’s North Darfur Region into famine.

The Famine Review Committee has confirmed that rampant starvation in the Zamzam camp in Sudan’s North Darfur Region has grown into famine. Among the 600,000 refugees sheltering here, 1 in 5 people/households now lack food and face starvation.

Children are in critical condition. In the malnutrition ward in the camp’s field hospital, beds are overflowing with patients and supplies are dwindling as RSF fighters continue to block trucks carrying life-saving humanitarian aid.

Stéphane Doyon, head of MSF’s emergency response in Sudan stated,

Because these supplies have not yet arrived, we only have enough therapeutic food left to last another few weeks. Already, many children [at the camp] are at death’s door. These supplies are needed to save their lives.
