Happy World Water Day

WORLD WATER DAY is here! Here’s how you can celebrate this important day in the most impactful way possible.

In 2015, the United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — goals to ensure everyone has a chance to live prosperously and peacefully by 2030. The sixth goal of this agenda? Clean water and sanitation for all.

While we have seen some progress towards this goal, we are still off target. Billions of people are still without access to clean water, impacting global health, economies and education. Even water supplies deemed “drinkable” may already be contaminated — recent studies indicate over 50% of tap water in the US is contaminated with "forever chemicals".

We must be the change the world needs to ensure everyone around the world has equal access to clean and safe drinking water. Here are just some of the ways to do just that:

  1. Conserve. Each minute spent in the shower is 2.5 gallons wasted. Eating local, plant-based products can reduce water consumption by 50%.
  2. Advocate. Be a water steward by talking to your friends, family and coworkers about these issues. Share this article with them.
  3. Clean. Nearly 50% of US freshwater water is contaminated. You can help by properly disposing of materials or joining a water cleanup event.
  4. Plant. Did you know one mature tree planted can store 100 gallons of water? Or by installing rain gardens you can 30% more water than conventional ones?
  5. Donate! Donations through VAKOVAKO go directly to organizations influencing policy and implementing on-the-ground solutions, such as providing filters and sanitation hardwares.
