Meet Médecins Sans Frontières
Across 70+ countries, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), otherwise known as Doctors Without Borders provides medical care, aid and assistance to those in need of it most. They do so by responding to global crises, such as malnutrition, consequences of armed conflict, natural disasters, and infectious disease outbreaks, in addition to helping refugees, people in poverty-stricken areas, and other groups often without medical care. Since its founding in 1971 by a group of journalists and doctors, MSF remains a private, international association, with a staff of 50,000 people of 169 nationalities, many of which are locally hired physicians and healthcare workers.
In 2021, over 12.5+ million medical consultations were administered by MSF humanitarian teams and over 1 million patients were admitted to MSF hospitals or clinics around the world. And their focus on child health helped assist over 300,000 births. Additionally, MSF fights overlooked tropical and contagious diseases, including COVID-19, ebola, HIV/AIDs, malaria, kala azar and Hepatitis E, as well as health impacts of climate-related emergencies, to crises. When medicine is not enough, MSF provides clean water, hygiene supplies, food and more.
MSF is a financially independent organization and does not accept any funding from political organizations, governments, pharmaceutical companies, arms manufacturers and any other organization unaligned with their values. Most of their funding comes from small donations, the majority of which are allocated to their most in-need programs.
